Roche trials could provide new ovarian cancer treatment

Pharmaceutical giant Roche completed a study that showed the combination of Avastin and chemotherapy followed by the continued use of the drug, also known as bevacizumab, increased the time women lived without the disease worsening.

Hal Barron, executive vice-president Global Development and chief medical officer for Roche, said that the study is part of the company's continued commitment to studying ovarian cancer.

"With few advances in ovarian cancer and a need to improve outcomes for women with this disease, it is encouraging that a second phase III study showed that Avastin in combination with chemotherapy followed by the continued use of Avastin alone helped women live longer," he added.

Roche recently released an overview of the new medicines in early-stage studies that were presented at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago.

Green industry 'still has huge potential'

The green sector still offers real potential for expansion, growth and creation of roles, such as sales jobs, according to one expert.

Simon Bullock, economy campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said that the previous Labour government started the stimulation of the green economy and now the coalition administration needs to support that progression.

"It's a growing sector but it does need support, so it's really important that the government continues to support these industries, whether it's offshore renewables or energy efficiency or low carbon vehicles," he stated.

The expert added that although the sector continues to grow it needs support from the government in the form of things, like the green investment bank, if it is to achieve its potential and create sales jobs in the process.

GlaxoSmithKline sees sales grow

One of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies has revealed that its total consumer healthcare sales rose by nine per cent in Europe and dwarfed the estimated one per cent growth.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) also saw 14 per cent growth for its pharmaceutical products and, with other big drug giants like Abbott and Roche reporting positive figures, people looking for sales jobs in the industry could be buoyed.

"Our sales growth is multi-sourced with good performances in our pharmaceuticals business, driven by vaccines, respiratory and dermatology products and in our consumer healthcare business," stated the company's chief executive, Andrew Witty.

Total sales for the pharmaceutical company reached £1.2 billion and the annual report revealed that brand innovations during the past three years represented 14 per cent of the sales.

The company added that it is on track to deliver annual cumulative cost savings of £2.2 billion by 2012.

Abbott 'bolstered by strong sales growth'

One of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies has released its annual figures, which show that strong sales have helped yield a successful year.

Abbott's annual figures revealed that 2009 saw a strong performance and there was sustained growth in 2010, according to chairman and chief executive officer Miles White.

Those looking for medical sales jobs could be buoyed by the figures, which showed a third consecutive year of double-digit ongoing earnings growth in 2009.

"We delivered strong sales and earnings growth and took strategic actions to reshape our business portfolio for the long term, adding early and late-stage pipeline technologies, as well as new growth platforms," he stated.

The positive figures have been bolstered by Abbott's acquisition of Solvay Pharmaceuticals, which gave the company a platform in markets across Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

Roche, one of Europe's largest pharmaceutical firms has reported increased sales of nine per cent in the first quarter of 2010, with its popular cancer medication being a large factor in its success.

The Swiss company said that its oncology treatment, Avastin, had helped to spearhead the impressive figures, which could be followed by a US launch of its rheumatoid arthritis therapy Actemra.

Commenting on the firm's first quarter performance, Roche's chief executive Severin Schwan said: "With sales advancing nine per cent, Roche is off to a very good start in 2010. Both divisions continued to outgrow their respective markets. We are thus fully on track for 2010."

Candidates looking for pharmaceutical sales jobs should paint a perfect picture of their skill level when looking for employment in the current economic climate, it has been claimed.

According to Avril Horn, senior consultant at CSL Recruitment, once jobseekers see a position they should look around on other job sites to see where else the role is advertised.

IT 'assists medical sales training'

IT platforms can help training providers deliver services to medical sales professionals more efficiently, it has been revealed.

According to development group Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, IT applications can help provide a standardised and centralised repository from where learning and training tools can be dispensed.

Jessica Erker, manager of training and development at the group, commented that the service needed to be efficient for sales specialists to use.

There is optimism regarding job prospects in the pharmaceutical industry despite the difficult economic climate, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by industry advice website PharmiWeb.com indicated 40 per cent of respondents from the pharmaceutical sector were optimistic about 2009, although 28 per cent were slightly anxious and a further 24 per cent claimed to be very worried.

In a statement the publication said: "Perhaps the optimism is based on the fact that the industry is considered to be more resilient than many others."

Earlier this month, employment site TipTopJobs.com claimed jobseekers are increasingly looking to work from home in the difficult economic climate.

The pharmaceutical sales recruitment market is looking healthy despite the difficult economic climate, it has been claimed.

According to healthcare recruitment group RSA, companies that put their intake on hold at the end of last year are starting to actively look for new staff again.

Darren Spevick, the group's new sales and marketing practice leader, said: "The new year has started well and although no one can predict exactly what will happen, there are grounds for optimism."

Mr Spevick went on to say pharmaceutical firms are realising that one way to beat the economic downturn is to increase effort and sales and marketing are vital achieving this.

UK schools 'need more nurses'

British schools should employ 2,000 more qualified nurses to monitor the overall health of school-aged children and advise on issues including teenage pregnancy and alcohol and drug misuse, it has been claimed.

Union Unite is calling on the government to ensure all 152 primary care trusts in England commit to each training ten new school nurses from September 2009.

Ros Godson, Unite/Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association professional officer for school-aged children, said cash spent on weighing and measuring children when they enter and leave primary school is a waste of public money.

She added: "Children and their parents or carers should be able to rely on the regular support of their school nurse throughout their child's time in school for health concerns when their child isn't ill."

Earlier this week, a spokesperson for the Department of Health said the NHS is committed to meeting its full quota of 500 community development workers by March 31st 2009, although the organisation initially aimed to have all staff in place by the end of March 2006.

NHS 'missing recruitment quotas'

UK primary care trusts have missed their target for employing community development workers (CDWs) by three years, it has been claimed.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health said that by the end of March 2008, there were 419.46 whole-time equivalents CDWs in posts against a goal of 500.

The representative added the NHS is committed to meeting its full quota by March 31st 2009.

"Community development workers are essential in reducing inequalities in how people from black and minority ethnic communities access, experience and achieve outcomes from mental health services," they added.

According to social care profession website Communitycare.co.uk, the government's Delivering Race Equality in Mental Health Care strategy, launched in 2005, required primary care trusts in England to recruit all 500 CDWs by 2006.

The site went on to say the services were also failing in other key aims of the strategy - reducing the rates of admission of people from ethnic minorities to inpatient units in England and Wales and cutting their disproportionate numbers in compulsory detention and seclusion.

Part-time uni jobs 'boost job chances later'

Director of the National Association of Student Employment Services Alison Clark claims there are strong advantages for those who incorporate term-time employment into their career plan.

Ms Clark claims this improves applicants' chances of being taken on board by their preferred companies as it will increase their employability.

An increasing number of employees are looking to work in smaller pharmaceutical companies over 'Big Pharma', industry figures are saying.

In news which might interest those in pharmaceutical sales recruitment, Pharmaceutical Technology Europe reports a trend towards employees in positions such as sales jobs choosing companies where they can have more of an impact.

Vice president for human resources at Chiesi Ugo Bettini claims for many looking for smaller companies, salaries are not the key motivating factor.

The number of primary care trust doctors being found by a recruiter has increased in the US, an industry report suggests.

Ryan Anholt, executive vice president of Delta Physical Placement, claims the study shows e-marketing is becoming a more useful tool for the recruiter.

He says direct mail works best if they are trying to find somebody to fill a specific vacancy, but the internet is better for more general opportunities.

Nicola Brewer, head of the commission for equality and human rights, has spoken out against outdated prejudices that she claims prevent working mothers from advancing as far up the career ladder as their male peers.

She asked: "Has policy on maternity leave made too many assumptions about the choices families will make and as a result entrenched the stereotype that it is women who do the caring and men who do the earning?"

Fathers should be given equal rights to flexible working and leave, in order to dispel employers' conceptions that taking on or promoting a woman in pharmaceutical sales and other roles is a risky option, Ms Brewer claims.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, echoed these views, calling for maternity leave to be transferable to fathers.

Uni courses 'could incorporate medical sales jobs'

Higher education courses could soon incorporate experience in the workplace, a new report suggests.

According to Universities UK, one of the three potential routes that the university sector could follow in the coming years would involve a closer relationship between recruiters and the students who could become their staff.

Such a structure could see people working in medical sales jobs for half of the time, while undertaking part-time courses at a higher education institution.

Another possible future for the industry could see private institutions cherry picking courses with lower entry costs and gaining the power to award degrees.

However, if neither of these futures materialises, universities could find themselves floundering and possibly failing due to funding shortfalls, the body warned.

Nigel Brown, an author of the report, described the document as a "wake-up call".

Speaking to the Guardian, he said: "This is the challenge they need to respond to decisively and urgently."

Sales jobs candidates considering moving into medical sales should spend at least one day work-shadowing an experienced medical professional, one industry expert has claimed.

Technical sales jobs such as pharmaceutical and medical sales offer some of the most comprehensive training programmes, but candidates need to be able to demonstrate their value to companies at interview, Philip Miles of Alchemy explains.

Work-shadowing will help sales recruitment candidates to get their foot in the door because they have experience of the work demands of their future clients such as doctors and nurses.

He notes that an ability to communicate past experience is particularly important for candidates in sales recruitment for the medical sector.

Mr Miles writes: "Don't expect to be taken at face value, you must be prepared to back up any claims with specific evidence from your previous experience."

He adds that enthusiasm is probably the most important trait sought by pharmaceutical companies in their sales recruitment.
