Pharmaceutical research boost from Europe
Sales of new pharmaceutical products could be set to pick up off the back of a new industry research initiative backed by the European Commission.
The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) has been developed to accelerate the development of new pharmaceutical medicines in Europe, with research projects into brain, metabolic and inflammatory conditions earmarked for launches later this year.
Employees in business development jobs will no doubt be keeping a keen eye on the number of medicines originating in Europe, which currently only produces around 35 per cent of new medicines globally.
European Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik underlined the focus of the IMI project, which has been granted a massive 2 billion budget until 2013.
"IMI is about pooling public and private efforts so that Europe can be a big player," he said.
Companies will no doubt be keen to capitalise on the research and production boost and many could boost their sales recruitment levels to keep up with the increase in supply.
